From Pinterest boards to shopping carts, and your whole wardrobe somehow ending up on the floor, figuring out what to wear is rough. But choosing one for your engagement shoot can feel totally impossible and overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you figure out the perfect OOTD for your session!
1. Bring Two Outfits
I am an indecisive person so I completely understand that It can be hard to decide if you want to go for a more casual or formal vibe for your session. So, I always recommend that you bring a casual outfit, as well as a more dressy one. This way you have a variety, and you do not have to choose!
However, if the stress of having to put together and coordinate another outfit is too much, you totally don't have to!
2. Wear what makes you comfortable
We all have our own insecurities, myself included! When putting your outfit together, think about what you already have in your closet and what you feel is most flattering on you. The more comfortable you feel, the more confident you will look!
We are all harder on ourselves than anyone else is, and chances are, nobody notices your insecurities except for you! That being said, make sure that you let your photographer know of any insecurities you may have beforehand so they can be mindful when shooting your session. We want you to love your gallery!
3. Coordinate with each other
Coordinating your outfits is super important! Make sure to dress in the same formality, and wear colors that compliment one another not clash or are too matchy-matchy! If you are ever in doubt, neutrals are always a good and safe option!
4. Wear neutral solid colors
Wear the colors you love if you'd like! just not the brightest version of them. muted colors photograph better. This is because bright colors bounce back onto the shadows of your face, and you want to avoid that if you can
Patterns can be a really good statement piece however if they are too busy, they can be distracting. We want the focus to be on you, and your emotions and connection, not what you are wearing. That being said, this isn't a set rule because patterns can totally elevate an outfit - just be mindful.
5. Pretty hands
During your session, we will definitely be getting some close-ups of that gorgeous rock on your finger. That being said, remember to polish your ring! The best way to do this is seriously just with dawn dish soap and a toothbrush. it doesn't have to be hard! Also, don't forget your manicure! I recommend a neutral color polish so it doesn't take away from your ring.
6. Keep the location and weather in mind
I am totally guilty of saying "Pain is beauty". But it is super important to dress for the season! If there is snow on the ground, fuzzy jackets, mittens, scarves, hand warmers etc. are your besties. Don't wear your adorable little dress in the middle of winter with the intent of suffering through it. If you are miserable and cold, it will reflect in your gallery.
As for location, Urban shoots are very different than nature shoots! if you are having your shoot in the woods, stilettos and going out clothes would look a bit out of place.
If your session is in nature, I recommend wearing more outdoorsy clothes. Plaid, Jeans, and boots look great! If you want to be a bit more dressy though, a flowy cottage core style dress or a sundress would be perfect!
aaanddd finally - HAVE FUN WITH IT!
